Some Recent Projects at Santry Community Garden
We're always up to something at SCG! As you will see in the images below, we engage in a variety of projects onsite throughout the year, so for those of you who may think that you are not the 'green-fingered' type, don't worry - there is always something else for you to do! We will put you to work quicker than you can blink!
All of our projects are centred around the upkeep and sustainable development of the garden. Members feel a sense of responsibility to the garden and we see ourselves as custodians of the garden. We always want to ensure that what we do benefits the garden and secures its future growth and development.
Redeveloping our 'R&R' area was a big project for us in 2024. Other examples of our projects like building a viewing window for our apiary and building a raised bed in our small polytunnel, are just two examples of smaller projects that we completed in the Orchard and the Kitchen/Vegetable Garden.
If helping out on these types of projects is of interest to you, then please consider becoming a member. There's definitely enough work to go around!
Funding for our projects
Some of our recent projects were big - one such project was the total re-development of the members' R&R Area in 2024. This project was funded through the Local Enhancement Programme (LEP). The LEP is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and Gaeltacht, and is administered through Local Authorities, in our case, Fingal County Council. Without grants like these much of the work we have undertaken in the past number of years would not have been possible. Income from membership fees simply does not cover big infrastucture and development projects like these. We're very grateful to Fingal County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development and Gaeltacht for the grants we have received to undertake these works.
We are grateful to our all our members who helped out this important project. Thank you, Brian, Timo, Ian, Dermot, Vince, Teeboi, Stephen, & Maria.
Every day's a school day at Santry Community Garden! Members learned that we had to build the table, then fire it, and seal/varnish it. We were very proud of our efforts on this project.
Another interesting project for us in 2024. We created a proper raised beds section in our small polytunnel. Dividing the plot up in this way made it easier to work the beds when planting and harvesting. Thank you to our members for help with this project, especially Brian, Timo, and the ever watchful Pepper!
