SERIOUS ABOUT SPUDS!
At Santry Community Garden we are serious about our spuds!
Every Spring, it's all hands on deck from when we start 'chitting' our potatoes, preparing the beds, and sowing our first crop of potatoes. We usually start chitting our 'Early Potatoes' in late January in our small polytunnel, see picture below. Early potatoes are fast-growing varieties, such as 'Duke of York', that will be ready to harvest in June or July. We sow them in March, and then we wait - patiently - for them to grow! We love when it's potato harvest time in the garden, and we are very proud of our potato crops!
Our next job is to select the plot where we will plant the potatoes. We rotate crops in the Kitchen Garden. We plant a different crop in each plot every year. This is in keeping with good soil management practices.
Once the plot is chosen, we use a rotavator to plough the soil, then we dig the drills in which we'll plant the lines of potatoes. This image shows a plot that is ready to be planted. Below, you can see our members hard at work planting one of our early varieties. All members then get to share the produce that's harvested in the summer.
